Retirement

The controlled shutdown or replacement of a system that is no longer needed.

Retirement is the controlled shutdown, decommissioning, or replacement of a system that is no longer needed. In cybersecurity, it is a critical lifecycle step because abandoned assets can become attack surfaces: old webcams, servers, routers, cloud instances, or application endpoints may keep exposing credentials, weak settings, or unpatched software long after their purpose has ended.

Good retirement means more than powering a device off. Teams should inventory the asset, revoke access, rotate keys and passwords, preserve needed logs or data, securely wipe storage, disable public DNS or network paths, and document the handoff. In real defenses, disciplined retirement reduces shadow IT, closes forgotten remote access, and prevents old infrastructure from being reused by attackers. In systems like long-running public feeds, retirement also decides whether the device is kept as an archive, replaced, or removed entirely, so operational value does not turn into unmanaged risk.
