Revenue cycle management

billing and payment handling for healthcare services and claims.

Revenue cycle management (RCM) is the set of business processes that handles healthcare billing and payment collection. It covers registration, insurance verification, coding, claims submission, denials, patient billing, payment posting, and collections. In practice, RCM systems connect providers, insurers, clearinghouses, and patients so money moves correctly for medical services.

RCM matters in cyber security because it often stores protected health information, personal data, and financial records, making it attractive to attackers. A compromise can expose claims data, delay reimbursements, disrupt patient care workflows, or create leverage for extortion. Ransomware groups and data thieves may target billing firms, managed service providers, or cloud portals used for claims processing. Defenders reduce risk with strong access control, multi-factor authentication, network segmentation, secure backups, vendor oversight, logging, and tested incident response plans.
