Rights reservation

A signal or notice that tells automated systems a work should not be reused under certain conditions.

A rights reservation is a machine-readable signal or notice that tells automated systems a work should not be reused under certain conditions. In practice, it can appear in metadata, headers, crawl directives, or licensing tags that say a page, image, audio file, or dataset is reserved from training, copying, or other forms of reuse.

It matters in cyber security because modern crawlers, content pipelines, and AI ingestion systems process data at scale and can ignore human-readable warnings. Defenders use rights reservations to enforce access policy, reduce unauthorized scraping, and preserve provenance records for audits. Attackers may try to bypass controls by stripping tags, spoofing metadata, or ingesting content from mirrors that do not carry the reservation. Security teams therefore need validation, logging, and policy checks so automated systems honor the signal consistently across platforms and jurisdictions.
