Risk scenario

A plausible sequence of events that could disrupt a service or affect security.

A risk scenario is a plausible sequence of events that could disrupt a service or affect security. It is more specific than a general threat because it shows how an initial weakness, such as a misconfiguration, phishing success, or system failure, can lead to an operational impact. In cyber security, scenarios help teams move from abstract risk statements to concrete situations that can be assessed and compared.

Risk scenarios matter because they connect assets, dependencies, and consequences. A service may rely on data, identity systems, or cloud components, and a scenario describes what happens if one of those parts fails or is abused. Defenders use scenarios in risk assessments, tabletop exercises, and control planning to prioritize protections and recovery steps. Attackers, in turn, often exploit exactly these chains: access, escalation, disruption, or data exposure. A good risk scenario makes that chain visible before it becomes an incident.
