An ROI exchange rate is an internal finance rule that converts movement in a KPI into dollar value. Instead of arguing that a metric “improved,” the organization agrees in advance how much a change in that metric is worth in financial terms. In cyber security, this can turn fewer phishing clicks, faster incident response, lower false positives, or reduced case handling time into a defensible business outcome.
This matters because security teams often measure technical wins that do not automatically appear on the P&L. A pre-agreed exchange rate lets finance, risk, and security use the same scoreboard when evaluating controls such as MFA, endpoint detection, email filtering, or SOC automation. It also reduces post-incident debate about whether a control really saved money, since the conversion formula was set before deployment. It is not a public standard; it is a governance tool for proving value with auditable metrics.
