Role-based administration

A permissions model that limits actions based on assigned administrative roles.

Role-based administration is a permissions model that assigns administrative abilities to named roles instead of giving every operator broad system-wide rights. In enterprise tools such as Microsoft Configuration Manager, roles can separate tasks like software deployment, device collection management, or server maintenance. This helps enforce least privilege: each admin gets only the actions needed for their job.

In cyber security, this model matters because it limits the blast radius of both mistakes and compromises. Attackers often look for overly powerful accounts, misconfigured role assignments, or paths to abuse a low-privilege role to reach more sensitive functions. Defenders use role-based administration to reduce standing privilege, review who can change critical settings, and detect unexpected role changes on management servers and consoles.
