A Route is a Kubernetes-style exposure mechanism that maps an external host or path to a service inside the cluster. In platforms such as OpenShift and multicluster systems, a Route is often the public entry point that makes an internal workload reachable from outside the cluster.
Routes matter because they expand the attack surface. If a Route points to a sensitive service, or if a proxy behind the Route accepts attacker-controlled targets, external traffic can be turned into access to private resources. This is a common theme in SSRF and proxy-abuse attacks: the public endpoint is not the real target, but a bridge to something that should stay internal. Defenders should limit who can create or modify Routes, validate backend targets, use authentication and TLS, and review whether each public exposure is truly necessary.
