Run rate

A shorthand for current sales momentum, often used to estimate future revenue from a short observation period.

A run rate is an estimate of future performance based on a business’s pace over a shorter period. For example, multiplying one month’s sales by 12 gives a simple annualized run rate. It can indicate current momentum, but it is a projection-not confirmed full-year revenue, cash received, or profit.

Run rates matter when evaluating fast-growing businesses, but comparisons can mislead if the time window, revenue definitions, or treatment of partner-mediated sales differ. In security-related business analysis, the same caution applies to claims about cybersecurity products or services: clarify what was measured and how before using a run rate to assess growth or risk. A sudden change in the estimate alone does not establish a breach, fraud, or a change in underlying performance.
