SAML Action

A configuration element used in federated identity and single sign-on workflows.

A SAML Action is a configuration element used in federated identity and single sign-on (SSO) workflows. In products such as gateways and identity services, it defines how a SAML message is handled, including which identity provider to trust, how assertions are processed, and what session or login behavior should follow. It is part of the plumbing that turns a SAML response into an authenticated user session.

This matters because SAML sits on a trust boundary: if a SAML Action is misconfigured, an attacker may be able to influence authentication decisions, redirect flows, or cause the system to accept the wrong identity data. Defenders check SAML Actions during audits of edge appliances and AAA deployments, verify certificate and endpoint settings, and ensure the configuration matches the intended provider and policy. In real attacks and defenses, these settings often decide whether single sign-on is secure or whether the login chain can be weakened by a logic flaw.
