SAML Service Provider

The system that relies on an external identity provider to authenticate a user.

A SAML Service Provider (SP) is the application or gateway that depends on an external Identity Provider (IdP) to authenticate a user. In a typical SAML flow, the SP redirects the user to the IdP, receives a signed assertion back, and then creates the local session if the assertion is valid. The SP does not usually verify the user’s password itself; it trusts the IdP’s response.

This role matters because the SP is part of the authentication trust chain. If its SAML handling is misconfigured or vulnerable, attackers may cause login failures, session confusion, or, in some cases, authentication bypass. Defenders focus on strict signature validation, audience and time checks, secure certificate management, and patching the SP software promptly. In enterprise environments, many downstream apps depend on one SP, so a fault here can quickly become a widespread access outage.
