SBOM management is the ongoing handling of software bill of materials records after they are generated. It includes storing and versioning SBOMs, controlling who can access them, and keeping each record linked to the correct software release, artifact, or deployed device.
It matters because an SBOM is useful only when defenders can find a trustworthy inventory for the software actually in use. During vulnerability response, teams can use managed records to identify affected components across releases and deployments. In practice, this means preserving updates over time, validating that records match their targets, and making them available to security and operations workflows. Generating a file is only the first step; management keeps that inventory usable.
