Sector authorities are public bodies or designated regulators that help apply cybersecurity rules to a specific industry, such as energy, transport, health, finance, or digital infrastructure. They translate broad national or EU requirements into sector-specific expectations that match how services actually operate.
In cyber security, this matters because a generic control list is often too vague to be useful. Sector authorities can validate which organizations are in scope, clarify what counts as critical services, and shape practical requirements for logging, incident reporting, backup resilience, access control, and supplier oversight. In a real attack or defense scenario, their guidance helps organizations decide what evidence to keep, how quickly to escalate incidents, and which operational systems must be protected first. This reduces ambiguity and improves coordination between regulators, operators, and incident response teams.
