Secure Service Edge (SSE) is a cloud-delivered security framework that combines network access controls with web security controls. In practice, SSE products often bundle services such as secure web gateway filtering, zero trust access, data protection, and policy enforcement into one managed platform. The goal is to inspect and control traffic close to the user, without relying only on on-premises appliances.
SSE matters because modern attacks often begin in the browser or over web-based services. By placing security controls in the cloud, defenders can block malicious sites, reduce exposure to phishing and drive-by downloads, and enforce safer access to SaaS applications. SSE also shows up in browser isolation strategies: risky web content can be routed through an isolated session while policies, identity checks, and web filtering stay centralized. The tradeoff is that teams gain simpler deployment and broader coverage, but also depend more on the provider’s architecture and policy design.
