A Security Impact Rating is Cisco’s severity label for a vulnerability, used to indicate how urgently the issue should be addressed. It is a remediation cue, not proof that a flaw is being exploited, and it should be read alongside the CVE, affected product, software version, exposure, and available fixes.
In practice, ratings such as critical or high help defenders sort patch queues, especially on internet-facing routers, switches, firewalls, and collaboration systems. Attackers often target these devices because they are high-value and hard to patch quickly. A high rating can reflect risks such as remote code execution, denial of service, or authentication bypass, so security teams use it to accelerate inventory checks, test fixed software, apply compensating controls, and shorten maintenance windows for exposed systems.
