SEPA

The European payment framework for standardizing euro transfers across participating countries.

SEPA, the Single Euro Payments Area, is the European framework that standardizes euro transfers across participating countries. It lets banks and fintech apps process credit transfers and direct debits with common rules, formats, and identifiers, which is why SEPA payments often feel similar whether they are domestic or cross-border.

In cyber security, SEPA matters because it is a common path for moving money fast. Attackers often abuse SEPA transfers in phishing, business email compromise, invoice fraud, and account takeover, where a victim is tricked into sending euros to a mule account. Defenders use SEPA controls such as beneficiary verification, transfer limits, approval workflows, MFA, and transaction monitoring to spot unusual recipients, amounts, or timing. Understanding SEPA helps teams see that payment convenience also creates a predictable target for fraud and social engineering.
