Service degradation

A partial loss of normal performance or reliability, even when a platform is still partly usable.

Service degradation is a partial loss of normal performance or reliability, even though a platform is still partly usable. Users may still reach the service, but responses can be slow, some features may fail intermittently, or error rates may rise. Unlike a complete outage, degradation often looks inconsistent, which makes it harder to diagnose and easier to underestimate.

In cyber security, service degradation matters because availability is a core part of trust. Attackers can cause it through denial-of-service pressure, resource exhaustion, abusive automation, or by targeting dependencies that many users share. Defenders also watch for degradation as an early warning sign of overload, misconfiguration, or infrastructure failure. In practice, it may appear as failed downloads, broken API calls, delayed authentication, or unstable SaaS features. Strong monitoring, rate limiting, redundancy, and fallback workflows help reduce the operational impact when a central service becomes unreliable.
