Service-hosted content

Data or media stored and delivered by a provider rather than saved as a local file by the user.

Service-hosted content is data or media that lives on a provider’s platform and is delivered to users on demand, rather than being saved as a local file. Examples include cloud documents, streaming media, AI-generated outputs, and shared assets that are accessible only through the service’s app or links.

This matters in cyber security because access depends on the provider’s systems, permissions, and retention rules. If a feature is retired, an account is disabled, or a link is revoked, the content may become unreachable even if the user created it. That makes export, backup, and records retention essential for business continuity and evidence preservation. In attacks, service-hosted content can be used to hide malware, phishing pages, or stolen data behind temporary cloud links. In defense, organizations use retention policies, eDiscovery, and controlled exports to keep important content searchable and recoverable outside a single vendor’s platform.
