A service outage is a disruption that makes a digital system unavailable, slow, or unreliable for its users. In cyber security, outages matter because attackers do not need to steal data to cause damage; blocking access to a website, payment portal, case system, or internal network can stop work immediately and affect customers, staff, or the public.
Outages appear in real incidents after malware infections, ransomware, distributed denial-of-service attacks, failed updates, or damaged infrastructure. Defenders look for signs such as repeated timeouts, inaccessible applications, or systems that are online but cannot complete requests. Common responses include isolating affected hosts, switching to backups, restoring services from clean copies, and using manual fallback procedures to keep essential operations running while the incident is contained.
