Service recovery

the process of restoring functions after disruption.

Service recovery is the process of restoring normal functions after a disruption. In cyber security, it covers more than simply rebooting a server: teams may need to rebuild systems, verify integrity, restore data, re-enable integrations, and confirm that users can safely access the service again. Good recovery work reduces downtime and limits the damage caused by ransomware, sabotage, outages, or failed updates.

Service recovery matters because an organization can only stay resilient if it can resume critical operations quickly and confidently. Effective recovery depends on knowing which systems are essential, what each service depends on, and who controls those components. In real defenses, this shows up through backups, disaster recovery plans, failover systems, and tested restoration procedures. In attacks, adversaries often try to delay recovery by deleting backups, corrupting configurations, or targeting shared dependencies, making preparation and dependency mapping a core part of defense.
