SIEM means Security Information and Event Management: a platform that ingests logs and alerts, normalizes them, and correlates related events. SOC means Security Operations Center: the team that watches those signals, investigates suspicious activity, and coordinates response. Together, SIEM/SOC forms the core of many monitoring and incident-response programs.
In cyber security, this pairing matters because attackers rarely trigger one obvious alarm. A SIEM can connect small clues such as unusual logins, privilege changes, and network anomalies across IT and OT systems, while the SOC decides whether the pattern indicates scanning, lateral movement, or a policy violation. In industrial environments, SIEM/SOC is especially useful when passive monitoring and segmentation are needed to avoid disrupting production. The main limitation is quality: if log sources are incomplete, poorly tuned, or disconnected from operational context, detections become noisy or late.
