Silent audio

Audio processing that can occur in a browser without producing sound the user hears.

Silent audio is browser-based audio processing that runs without producing sound a user can hear. Web code can create or analyze audio signals in the background, using the browser’s audio APIs to measure how a device handles sound generation and processing.

This matters in cyber security because the tiny differences in audio behavior, timing, and rendering can become a fingerprint. Attackers or trackers may combine silent audio with other browser signals to recognize a device across visits, even after cookies are cleared. The technique is hard to notice because there is no visible prompt and no audible output, which makes it useful for stealthy tracking and privacy-invasive profiling. Defenders look for unusual use of audio APIs, restrict unnecessary browser permissions, apply privacy protections, and reduce the amount of client-side data exposed to scripts. In practice, silent audio is less about listening and more about turning normal browser features into a hidden identifier.
