Smartphones

general-purpose mobile devices that can influence how other devices are set up and used.

Smartphones are general-purpose mobile devices that often act as controllers for other hardware, from earbuds and wearables to medical and industrial equipment. In security terms, they are not just endpoints; they can become a control plane for setup, pairing, authentication, and day-to-day configuration. Companion apps, Bluetooth, NFC, QR enrollment, and cloud sync all make phones powerful, but they also expand the trust boundary around the connected device.

This matters because a compromised phone can change settings, approve malicious pairings, expose sensitive data, or redirect a user to unsafe updates and permissions. Attackers may target the phone app rather than the protected device itself, while defenders rely on signed firmware, least-privilege app permissions, strong authentication, and careful device management. When a smartphone influences how another device is used, securing the phone becomes part of securing the whole system.
