Snort

A widely used open-source network intrusion detection engine.

Snort is a widely used open-source network intrusion detection engine. It inspects packets and network flows for signs of malicious or policy-violating activity, then generates alerts when traffic matches known signatures or suspicious patterns. In practice, Snort is used as an IDS: it observes traffic without blocking it, giving defenders visibility into probes, exploit attempts, brute-force traffic, and malware command-and-control chatter.

Snort matters because detection quality depends on fast, accurate inspection and well-tuned rules. Security teams deploy it to monitor critical segments, enrich alerts with packet evidence, and spot attacks that endpoint tools may miss. In real defenses, Snort can be placed on a span port or network tap, where it watches inbound and lateral traffic for exploit signatures, protocol abuse, or scans. Its value is highest when teams maintain rules, reduce false positives, and use alerts to guide response.
