Social media profiling

the process of building a target picture from public online activity and personal details.

Social media profiling is the process of assembling a target picture from public online activity and personal details. Attackers combine posts, photos, location tags, follower networks, routines, and identity clues to infer who a person is, where they live or travel, what they value, and whether they may be worth targeting.

In cyber security, this matters because open-source data can support both digital and physical attacks. A profile may help criminals link a username to a real-world identity, spot signs of cryptocurrency ownership, or time a phishing message to look believable. In physical coercion schemes, the same information can be used to pick victims for intimidation or robbery. Defenders use the same idea in reverse: by reducing public exposure, separating identities, disabling precise location sharing, and reviewing privacy settings, users can make it harder for adversaries to build an accurate target profile.
