Software cash register

A checkout solution delivered through software rather than only dedicated hardware.

A software cash register is a checkout system delivered mainly as software, often running on a tablet, PC, or cloud-connected device instead of a dedicated fiscal appliance. It records sales, applies tax rules, prints or sends receipts, and may sync transaction data to payment processors or tax authorities. In cyber security, this matters because the cash register becomes a software stack with APIs, credentials, updates, and network links, not just a sealed box.

That wider attack surface creates opportunities for malware, configuration tampering, data theft, and fraudulent transaction manipulation. Attackers may target the app, the operating system, connected payment terminals, or the back-end service that stores fiscal records. Defenders reduce risk with strong authentication, signed updates, least-privilege access, encrypted records, tamper-evident logs, and clear separation between payment and fiscal functions. For merchants, the key issue is that integrity and accountability must be protected as carefully as availability.
