Space control

Actions designed to contest and maintain freedom of operation in space.

Space control is a military and security concept for actions that contest, protect, and maintain freedom of operation in space. It includes measures to defend satellites, communications links, and ground systems, while also limiting an adversary’s ability to use space services.

It matters because modern space assets are part of a larger network, not just objects in orbit. A satellite can be disrupted without being physically destroyed if its command link is jammed, its software is compromised, or its ground segment is attacked. In practice, space control may involve counterspace capabilities, space domain awareness, resilience planning, and cyber defenses such as access control, logging, and secure telemetry. The term is often used in doctrine when describing systems meant to preserve military or strategic access to orbit while denying the same advantage to an opponent.
