Space domain awareness is the ability to detect, track, characterize, and attribute activity in orbit and across the wider space environment. It includes watching satellites, debris, maneuvers, launch events, and other objects or behaviors that affect the space domain. For security teams, it is the equivalent of situational awareness in a hostile network: you cannot defend what you cannot observe.
It matters in cyber security because modern satellites depend on software, telemetry, command links, and ground infrastructure. An attacker may not need to damage hardware in orbit; jamming, spoofing, phishing ground operators, or compromising control networks can degrade a satellite’s mission. Space domain awareness helps defenders spot unusual movements, identify interference, confirm whether an anomaly is accidental or hostile, and support attribution. In practice, it combines sensors, analytics, logs, and cross-domain intelligence to protect both orbital assets and the cyber systems that control them.
