Steam Guard

Steam’s account protection layer that adds an extra verification step for logins and device authorization.

Steam Guard is Valve’s account protection layer for Steam. It adds an extra verification step when someone signs in from a new device or authorizes a login, usually through an email code or the Steam Mobile Authenticator. This makes stolen passwords less useful, because an attacker still needs the second factor or an already trusted device.

In cyber security, Steam Guard matters because game accounts can hold valuable items, linked payment methods, and access to other services. Attackers often try to defeat it indirectly by stealing session cookies, compromising the linked email account, or infecting a trusted device with malware. Defenders rely on Steam Guard as part of layered security, but it is strongest when paired with good endpoint hygiene, unique passwords, and careful handling of suspicious game mods, cheats, or third-party utilities.
