STL

A common 3D mesh file format used to describe printable geometry.

STL is a common 3D mesh file format used to describe the surface geometry of an object for 3D printing and rapid prototyping. It stores triangles, not materials, colors, or assembly logic, which makes it simple, widely supported, and easy to modify. In maker projects and open hardware builds, STL files often define enclosures, brackets, and moving parts that are later printed and assembled with firmware-driven electronics.

In cyber security, STL matters because design files are part of the supply chain. A malicious or careless change in geometry can break fit, jam motion, weaken a part, or alter how a device operates, especially in systems with moving components. Defenders should treat STL files like code: pin trusted revisions, verify hashes, review source repositories, and print from known-good artifacts. In attacks or tampering scenarios, altered STL files can be a stealthy way to introduce physical faults without changing firmware.
