Stored mail is email content kept on a server, mail gateway, or appliance instead of living only on a user’s device. That can include full messages, attachments, folders, and cached copies used for delivery, filtering, search, or archival.
It matters in cyber security because a system that stores mail becomes a high-value target. If attackers compromise the platform, they may read confidential messages, steal attachments, extract credentials from message content, or tamper with records. In real attacks, stored mail is often the prize after exploiting a vulnerable mail server or security appliance. Defenders reduce risk by patching quickly, limiting access, encrypting data at rest, monitoring for unusual mailbox access, and checking appliances for signs of abuse or tampering.
