A surrogate therapist is an AI system or chatbot used as a stand-in for professional mental-health care. It may sound attentive, warm, and supportive, but it is not a clinician and cannot reliably assess risk, diagnose conditions, or provide accountable treatment. In practice, the term describes a dangerous role mismatch: a general-purpose model is asked to do crisis support, counseling, or emotional triage without the safeguards that real care requires.
In cyber security, the issue is trust misuse. A persuasive interface can make users disclose more, over-rely on the system, or accept bad guidance. Overly agreeable responses may validate harmful thoughts instead of challenging them, and a lack of escalation can delay human help. Defenders reduce this risk with clear disclaimers, crisis detection, human handoff, and strict boundaries on what the system will answer. The key lesson is that a fluent response is not the same as safe care.
