Technology ecosystem

The connected network of companies, tools, infrastructure, and services that supports a sector.

A technology ecosystem is the connected network of companies, tools, infrastructure, and services that helps a technology sector function. It can include hardware makers, software developers, cloud or network providers, integrators, research organizations, and customers. For example, a quantum computing ecosystem includes more than quantum processors: it also needs control software, algorithms, infrastructure, and services that help organizations use the systems.

In cyber security, an ecosystem matters because security depends on the relationships and dependencies between its parts. A weakness or compromise in a supplier, software component, or service can affect organizations that rely on it. Defenders map these dependencies, assess providers, and establish security and governance requirements across the supply chain. In emerging sectors, understanding the ecosystem also helps distinguish credible, supportable technology from systems that lack reliable operational backing.
