Telco sensing

using telecom infrastructure as a distributed system for detecting events in the physical world.

Telco sensing is the use of telecom infrastructure, such as 5G radios, fiber, and network edge systems, as a distributed sensor for detecting events in the physical world. Instead of only carrying communications, the network also helps observe movement, interference, or other environmental changes. This matters in cyber security because the same infrastructure that connects users can become part of a monitoring and alerting layer.

In defensive use, telco sensing can help identify drones, tampering, sabotage, or unusual activity near critical sites. In attack scenarios, the concern is the opposite: a sensing-enabled network can collect highly sensitive data, so weak access control, poor auditing, or loose data sharing can turn a defensive tool into a privacy and surveillance risk. Strong standards, retention limits, and governance are essential so the system remains useful without expanding unchecked visibility.
