Tenant records are the operational files and database entries used to manage leases, billing, maintenance, deposits, contact details, and other property-management activity. In a real estate environment, these records may live in document systems, accounting software, portals, or outsourced service platforms.
They matter in cyber security because they are often sensitive, business-critical, and widely shared across teams and vendors. If attackers access or alter tenant records, they can expose personal data, disrupt rent collection, cause invoice errors, or interfere with lease administration. In real attacks, tenant records are attractive for extortion because they combine privacy impact with immediate operational pressure. Defenders protect them with least-privilege access, strong authentication, logging, backups, and segmentation between public-facing portals and internal finance systems.
