Terminal emulator

Software that displays a text-based session on a modern computer.

A terminal emulator is software that presents a text-based session on a modern computer, making it look and behave like a traditional terminal. It lets a user run a shell, manage files, inspect logs, and administer systems through typed commands instead of graphical menus. Unlike an old hardware terminal, an emulator may add tabs, scrollback, copy-and-paste, and color support, but the underlying interaction is still command driven.

In cyber security, terminal emulators matter because they are a common control point for administration, incident response, and attacker tradecraft. Defenders use them to connect to servers, verify output, and automate checks. Attackers also rely on them to issue commands quickly and quietly once they gain access. The risks are practical: a wrong host, a pasted command, or misleading text output can lead to damaging mistakes. Security teams therefore watch terminal activity, restrict privileged access, and train users to confirm the prompt, path, and target system before running commands.
