Terms of Service (TOS)

The usage rules that define what customers may and may not do with a service.

Terms of Service are the usage rules a provider sets for its product or platform. They define what customers may do, what is forbidden, and what actions can lead to suspension or legal claims. In cyber security, TOS matter because many attacks begin as “ordinary” use that violates contract rules rather than breaking into a system directly.

For example, a TOS may prohibit reverse engineering, automated scraping, account sharing, or building a competing model from service outputs. Attackers and abuse operators may ignore these limits while sending high-volume requests, collecting responses, and using them to imitate a service or extract data. Defenders use TOS as part of a broader control stack: they combine contract language with logging, rate limits, identity checks, and anomaly detection so they can detect misuse, enforce access policies, and preserve evidence when behavior crosses from heavy usage into unauthorized abuse.
