Third Party Risk Management

A broader discipline for governing risk from external providers, contractors, and service partners.

Third Party Risk Management (TPRM) is the discipline of identifying, assessing, and controlling cybersecurity risk introduced by external providers, contractors, consultants, and service partners. It goes beyond a one-time questionnaire: mature TPRM programs classify suppliers by sensitivity, review access to data and systems, track remediation, and reassess trust over time.

TPRM matters because many attacks enter through trusted relationships rather than direct compromise of the target. A supplier may have VPN access, API keys, software updates, or shared business workflows, making its weaknesses part of your attack surface. In defense, TPRM connects procurement, identity, security operations, and audit evidence so risky access can be reduced before onboarding and revoked or reviewed when conditions change. Strong programs combine due diligence, continuous monitoring, human verification, and clear audit trails, because automated risk scores alone cannot prove a partner is safe.
