Transition strategy

a practical plan for moving from one role to another with less disruption.

A transition strategy is a practical plan for moving from one state to another with minimal disruption. In cyber security, that can mean shifting users to new systems, handing off duties between teams, replacing a compromised account, or moving from one control set to another during an upgrade. The goal is to keep services available, preserve visibility, and avoid creating gaps that attackers can exploit.

It matters because many security failures happen during change. A rushed migration can leave old credentials active, weaken logging, or create misconfigurations that expose data. Good transition strategies use staged rollouts, rollback plans, access reviews, backup validation, and clear ownership for each step. In incident response, the strategy may include isolating affected assets, moving operations to a clean environment, and restoring trust in a controlled sequence. In defense, careful transitions reduce downtime and close the window where both old and new environments are partially exposed.
