Triage trigger

an event that prompts immediate verification and containment checks.

A triage trigger is any event that prompts an incident-response team to begin immediate verification and containment checks. It does not prove a breach on its own; instead, it raises the priority of an alert or report so defenders can quickly decide whether the event is benign, suspicious, or actively harmful.

In cyber security, triage triggers matter because speed is important, but so is accuracy. Common triggers include a public extortion listing, unusual login activity, endpoint alerts, leaked credentials, or sudden file-encryption behavior. Once triggered, teams typically preserve logs, check account and network activity, review exposed systems, and look for signs of data theft or lateral movement. Used well, triage prevents both delay and overreaction: it helps defenders focus on evidence, contain real threats early, and avoid treating unverified claims as confirmed compromise.
