Trust assessment

A process for judging whether a project or component meets expected security and reliability standards.

Trust assessment is the process of judging whether a project, component, or supplier meets expected security and reliability standards. In cyber security, it is used to decide whether software can be safely adopted, updated, or allowed into a production environment.

This matters because attackers often target software supply chains, where a trusted package can be replaced, neglected, or indirectly compromised through dependencies. A good trust assessment looks at signals such as maintenance activity, release hygiene, vulnerability response, disclosure practices, and the quality of build and signing processes. In open source environments, it helps defenders move beyond reputation and evaluate whether a project is actually well maintained. Used well, trust assessment supports safer procurement, faster patching, and lower exposure when upstream flaws or malicious changes appear.
