Trust indicators

Visual cues that show whether a participant is external, guest, or anonymous.

Trust indicators are visual cues in a collaboration or messaging platform that show whether a participant is internal, external, a guest, or anonymous. They may appear as banners, labels, profile markers, or warnings beside a name. Their purpose is to help users quickly judge who is really speaking to them before they share data or take action.

They matter because many attacks succeed by looking familiar. In social-engineering campaigns, an attacker may use an external chat account to pose as IT support, a vendor, or a coworker. If the user misses the indicator, they may approve remote access, reveal a password, or open a malicious file. Defenders use these cues as part of a broader control set: clear external-user labeling, restricted guest access, user training, and phishing-resistant MFA. Trust indicators do not stop an attack by themselves, but they make impersonation easier to spot and slow down impulsive responses.
