An unauthenticated attack path is a way to reach and exploit a vulnerability without first logging in or supplying valid credentials. It can begin with input exposed to anyone who can access a service, such as a request or configuration value processed by a network-facing application.
This matters because attackers do not need a stolen account or a prior foothold to attempt exploitation. In the GitLab context, a specially crafted regular expression submitted through CI/CD configuration was described as reaching a vulnerable server-side compiler. Defenders should identify exposed, affected versions, apply vendor patches promptly, and review relevant logs and indicators. An unauthenticated route signals elevated exposure, but does not by itself prove that exploitation or compromise occurred.
