An Unfair Practices Act is a consumer-protection law that forbids deceptive, misleading, or unfair business conduct. It is not a cybercrime statute, but it can become highly relevant when digital products or platforms present users with confusing disclosures, hidden terms, manipulated consent flows, or misleading claims about how data is collected and used.
In cyber security, these laws matter because repeated harmful behavior at platform scale can create legal exposure even without a breach or malware incident. Attackers may abuse deceptive interfaces or fraudulent messages to push users into unsafe actions, while defenders use clear notices, audit trails, documentation, and compliance reviews to prove that user-facing controls are truthful and consistent. For security and privacy teams, the lesson is that trust controls are also legal controls: if the product says one thing and the system does another, the gap can become a liability issue.
