PHP’s upload-progress feature records the status of file uploads, such as how many bytes have been received. Applications and scripts can use this information to display progress to users. Depending on the PHP configuration, progress data may be associated with a session and stored where PHP or application code can access it.
In cyber security, upload-progress matters because attacker-controlled upload or session data may become a step in an exploitation chain if a vulnerable code path later processes it unsafely. Attackers may probe session identifiers or upload-progress fields to test whether their input reaches a useful location; such probing alone does not prove code execution or compromise. Defenders should apply relevant PHP security updates, review unusual upload and session activity, and investigate suspicious PHP processes or unexpected outbound requests.
