Upstream dependencies

Earlier components, such as weights or training data, that a model relies on.

Upstream dependencies are the earlier components an AI system inherits, such as base model weights, training data, adapters, tokenizers, or post-training layers. They are “upstream” because they exist before the final packaged model and can shape its behavior long after the model is re-released or rebranded.

This matters in cyber security because inherited components can also carry risk: biased outputs, poisoned data, unsafe capabilities, licensing issues, or hidden backdoors. A model may look trustworthy on the surface while still depending on compromised or unvetted inputs underneath. Defenders reduce this risk by tracking provenance, comparing fingerprints, reviewing model cards and data documentation, and running behavioral tests to detect inherited traits. In attacks, adversaries may tamper with training data or insert malicious adapters; in defense, security teams verify upstream dependencies before deployment instead of trusting a product label alone.
