Urgency bias

the tendency to act too quickly under pressure.

Urgency bias is the tendency to act too quickly when a request feels time-sensitive. In cyber security, attackers exploit this by adding pressure: “pay now,” “verify immediately,” or “your account will be closed.” The goal is to make the target skip normal checks and respond before thinking critically.

This matters because many scams do not rely on malware or advanced exploits. Instead, they use social engineering to push people into unsafe actions such as sharing passwords, approving a payment, or revealing personal data. Defenders reduce urgency bias by building pause-and-verify habits: stop before replying, confirm requests through a separate trusted channel, and treat unexpected deadlines as a warning sign. Training users to recognize pressure tactics is one of the most effective controls against messaging-app fraud and impersonation scams.
