User accounts

identity records that may matter for access control and follow-on abuse.

User accounts are identity records that represent people, service identities, or privileged operators in a system. They usually include a username, authentication method, roles, and access rights. In cyber security, accounts matter because they define who can log in, what data can be reached, and which actions can be performed.

Exposed user accounts are valuable to attackers because they can be used for password spraying, credential stuffing, phishing, privilege escalation, or follow-on access to internal systems. Even partial account data can help build target lists or reveal active roles and business relationships. Defenders protect accounts with strong passwords, multi-factor authentication, least privilege, logging, and rapid disabling of unused or suspicious accounts. Reviewing account activity is often one of the first steps after a suspected data exposure.
