User Protection Fund

A reserve some exchanges use to help cover certain losses; Bitget said this incident falls within that coverage.

A User Protection Fund is a reserve set aside by some crypto exchanges to help cover eligible customer losses after an operational failure, breach, or other severe incident. It is not the same as insurance in the traditional sense: the exact rules, limits, and payout conditions depend on the exchange’s policy and the nature of the loss.

In cyber security, this fund matters because it can reduce immediate panic after an attack and buy time for forensics, wallet review, and withdrawal controls. Attackers often target hot wallets, admin systems, or signing workflows; if funds are stolen from those layers, a protection reserve may help offset user harm while investigators trace assets and verify the scope of the compromise. The fund is a financial backstop, not a technical control, so it complements-but does not replace-strong key management, monitoring, and incident response.
