Validity and reliability

Core testing properties that ask whether an exam measures the right skill and does so consistently.

Validity asks whether an assessment measures the skill it claims to measure. Reliability asks whether it produces consistent results across candidates, attempts, or versions. A test can be reliable without being valid: it might consistently reward the wrong ability.

In cyber security training and certification, these properties help determine whether a score is meaningful and fair. For an AI-scored roleplay, validity depends on whether scenarios and scoring criteria reflect real job skills; reliability depends on whether comparable responses receive comparable scores. Defenses include documenting criteria, testing results across groups and scenarios, tracking model or rubric changes, and providing review or appeal processes. These checks make assessments more trustworthy and reduce the risk of poor decisions based on misleading scores.
