Vapor pressure

The pressure exerted by a substance's vapor when it is in balance with its liquid or solid form.

Vapor pressure is the pressure a substance’s vapor exerts when it is in equilibrium with its liquid or solid form. In practice, it describes how readily a material evaporates or condenses at a given temperature. Higher temperature usually means higher vapor pressure, which is why water, solvents, and other fluids behave very differently in sealed or low-pressure environments.

In cybersecurity, vapor pressure matters anywhere physical conditions affect systems or evidence. It influences vacuum drying, condensation inside enclosures, corrosion on electronics, and the behavior of cleaning solvents used in labs and hardware repair. Attackers may try to exploit environmental conditions to damage devices, interfere with sensors, or alter storage media, while defenders use pressure, temperature, and humidity controls to protect hardware and preserve forensic integrity. Understanding vapor pressure helps security teams predict when moisture will move, when materials will dry, and when a “dry” device may still hide damaging residual moisture.
